Display bought at the placement level

Display done with placement exclusions, frequency caps and real viewability standards. We ensure your budget reaches actual people rather than being consumed by refresh heavy junk inventory.

Demand Creation

What display advertising actually does

If search is demand capture, display is demand creation. It exists to solve the fundamental limitation of search: eventually, you run out of people actively looking for your product. To grow beyond that ceiling, you have to introduce your brand to people who fit your customer profile but are currently reading the news, checking the weather, or browsing an industry forum.

Because display intercepts people when they are not actively looking to buy, the conversion rate is fundamentally lower than search. That is not a failure of the channel; it is the mechanical reality of top of funnel advertising.

The objective is to buy this awareness as cleanly and efficiently as possible, ensuring that the impressions you pay for are actually seen by human eyes, so that when those people eventually need your service, they search for your brand by name.

Unfortunately, the display ecosystem is riddled with perverse incentives. Ad networks want to sell as much inventory as possible, publishers want to monetize every pixel of their real estate, and the result is a landscape where unmanaged campaigns bleed money into a void. If you suspect your display budget is achieving nothing, an ad account audit will expose exactly where the impressions are landing.

The hygiene story

We buy viewability, not impressions

The open web is filled with low quality inventory designed entirely to drain advertiser budgets. You have to fight the platforms to avoid it.

The metric "impressions" is largely meaningless in modern display advertising. A platform will gladly report that your ad received ten thousand impressions on a website, but fail to mention that the ad was loaded at the bottom of the page, below the fold, on a site where the user spent less than three seconds.

The scourge of the display network is the Made For Advertising (MFA) site. These are clickbait domains that buy cheap social media traffic, load fifteen ad units on a single page, and auto refresh those ads every ten seconds. They provide zero value to the user and generate zero revenue for the advertiser, but they represent a massive percentage of default display inventory.

Our management of display advertising is defined by extreme placement hygiene.

  • We deploy aggressive, constantly updated exclusion lists to block MFA sites and click fraud domains.
  • We target viewability, bidding only on inventory where the ad is mathematically proven to have been visible on the screen.
  • We strictly exclude mobile app game traffic, where "clicks" are usually accidental taps from users trying to close a pop up.
  • We enforce strict frequency caps to ensure your budget reaches new people rather than annoying the same user fifty times a week.

Measurement

How to track a channel nobody clicks

If you grade display advertising by last click conversions, you will turn it off. That is the wrong way to read the data.

  1. 01

    Moving past the click

Display ads are visual billboards. People see them, register the brand, and scroll past. Later, when the need arises, they search for you. Relying on click through attribution ignores the actual mechanism of the channel.

  2. 02

    View through conversions

We configure the measurement layer to track view through conversions. If a user is served your display ad, does not click, but navigates to your site and converts within a defined window, the display channel deserves partial credit for initiating the journey.

  3. 03

    Lift in brand search

The ultimate test of a display campaign is whether it causes an increase in people searching for your company name. When we turn on a display campaign in a specific geography, we expect to see branded search volume rise in that same territory.

  4. 04

    Incrementality testing

For larger budgets, we run holdout tests. We turn display off in one state and double it in another, then measure the aggregate impact on total sales. This is the only way to prove what the display spend is genuinely worth.

Disqualification

Who should not buy display advertising

If you do not currently have a well oiled, highly profitable paid search campaign running, you should not be spending money on display advertising. Search captures the people who are ready to buy right now. Display creates the people who might be ready to buy next month. You must build the bottom of the funnel before you pour money into the top.

Furthermore, display requires patience and a budget capable of absorbing the learning phase. It is not a channel for businesses that need to generate a positive return on ad spend by Friday to make payroll. It is a compounding investment designed to lower your overall cost of acquisition over a twelve month horizon.

If your budget is highly constrained, we will direct every dollar to search and retargeting first. We only advocate for display when the foundational channels are secure.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is display advertising only good for brand awareness?

No. While it is excellent for top of funnel demand creation, carefully structured display campaigns with strict frequency caps and deliberate placement exclusions can drive direct response, particularly in long cycle B2B and high ticket e commerce.

How do you measure success if people do not click display ads?

We measure view through conversions and lift in branded search volume. Relying entirely on last click attribution for display is a mistake, as the channel is designed to introduce the brand, while search usually captures the eventual conversion.

What is an MFA site?

Made For Advertising sites are low quality websites designed exclusively to host ad units. They buy cheap traffic, refresh the ads every few seconds, and drain advertiser budgets. We exclude them aggressively.
